Through the creation of Becoming, Luciana engaged the artists in a range of creative writing practices. Some emerged as free writing immediately following guided dance sessions, while others were responses to questions connected to the work’s themes of transformation, new beginnings and letting go. Luciana gathered and edited these texts, then brought them back to the group to record their voices reading the final poems. These recordings were incorporated into specific scenes of the video installation, for which a soundtrack was composed.
Here they are:
1
I yearned to slide into a past I’d relinquished
but first I needed to remember that I could choose
between velocity and stillness
movement and sound
rivers and oceans
stars and stars.
So much wealth.
Consider having life
that
after choosing a day of my choice
I can have both
memory and imagination.
The room I entered
had two chambers
where the choral glimmering of children
became the soundtrack of dancers
where
I am guided
to make circles with my body
form and reform shapes proximities analogies.
Notice the arrangements and rearrangements of movers.
Notice how the floor holds sunshine and shadow.
Enter and exit through walls windows and dreams.
Move in cannon
with intention or vacillation.
Open breath to acceptance and authenticity.
Leave behind resistance.
Leave behind everything and nothing.
II
Entering the room was like meeting myself for the first time
I left my shadow self, the hidden one
I saw myself transported into the swirling whirl
Catching myself catching you
My every breath,
Every thought,
Every feeling,
Every step,
Are traces
And echoes
Of
Me
III
A black hole
on the floor
deep into my mind
ca’t see the end
there is no end
just an endless
pool of tears
IV
I reach out with my hands
Emptiness
A splash of colour
Inner turmoil
Looking back
Looking in
An ocean
A puddle
A voice
Eucalyptus grove
My mother’s ashes
Distant voice calling
Calling
Calling
distant
distant
distant
voice
Echo
Rain and Tears
Rain Rain Rain
From Infinity
to Eternity
V
Energy, from the side, from above, from behind.
Thinking about your energy.
Light is one element of shadow. My shadow goes in. Leaving it there, going out.
A hand is calling me, arms, are you still there? Are you missing me? Do you call me?
There is the light and I am in the shadow. I am still in, in the light and in the shadow.
I am falling and I am in and out, here and now, holding my breath, breathing out.
This is me or is it not? Two, three, four me’s?
VI
I reach beyond any place and space
I can cross borders and limitations
my dance-body can become any body
I bring my memories into the present
no/thing is left behind
time disappears
I can be nowhere
but always
now
here
